Rev. Linus Otronyi International Associate LBT Coordinator, Cross River State, Nigeria
Rev. Linus Otronyi is an international associate of LBT and LBT’s Coordinator in Cross River State. About 12 years ago while studying at Jonathan Ekong Memorial Seminary of the Lutheran Church of Nigeria, Linus took interest in Bible translation, learned computer skills, and keyboarded drafts of Old Testament books in Yala into translation software. Since that time Linus has called people together for organizational meetings, led translation workshops, and in other ways encouraged progress on producing the complete Bible in the Yala language. Linus has never served full-time in a parish, but has always been involved in work related to Bible translation. Since 2007 Linus has been working with our partners in Nigeria to participate in and lead sociolinguistic survey trips into areas where linguistic relationships and attitudes are not adequately documented. Nigeria has more than 500 languages, and it is not entirely clear how or whether some of them are interrelated. Linus has also been working on several projects with our partners. He has arranged and provided technical expertise for the recording of an audio-visual version of the gospel of Luke into six languages of northern Cross River State. He recently helped facilitate the participation of six other languages in a Luke Partnership project, designed to produce basic literacy materials and the gospel of Luke in all six languages in a period of three years. Linus is a native of Iboko, a community in Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State. Iboko is the place where Rev. Morris Watkins and family stayed in the early 1960s and hatched the idea of Lutheran Bible Translators. Linus was born around the time that the New Testament in the Yala language was dedicated. Pray for more safe travel while visiting various language areas and for wisdom and skill as Linus encourages those groups in organizational and ownership issues, so that God’s word will have a lasting effect on people’s lives.
