An introduction by Claire S.
It’s so hard to imagine my life for the next 3 ½ years living in a country on the other side of the world, but on the other hand, I couldn’t be more thrilled! For those of you who do not know me as well, my name is Claire S. I graduated from UW-Green Bay last year in Spanish, Applied Linguistics, and Education. I am the newest missionary with Lutheran Bible Translators and I am answering the call for ESL assistance in the Bible translations projects in Ethiopia. My first 6 months in the country will be language training in the capital (Addis Ababa). Then I will be working with about 4 rural tribes in south western Ethiopia for 3 years.
When people hear about me and what I’ll be doing they often say, “I could never do that!” or “You’re giving up so much to go do this.” I would have responded very similarly up until 4-ish years ago. I always expected to go on short term missions for the rest of my life, but I also wanted to settle down and have a “normal” career. It was during my sophomore year at a Christian conference for college students that the Holy Spirit awakened my heart to a new understanding of what “lost” means and who they are. I found out that hundreds of millions of people exist today who have never once heard about Christ and millions more exist who don’t have any opportunity to learn about Him (Romans 10:14-15). During that conference, I applied to spend the summer of 2010 in the Middle East reaching out to those who were lost and didn’t even know it. It changed my life! I realized that spending the rest of my life reaching the unreached for Christ is worth it even if I never see the results. While once I said, “I could never do that,” now I praise God for simply sending me!
Claire S. is LBT’s newest missionary who hopes to leave for the field in early January. She will be our first missionary in Ethiopia.
